Parallel Genetic Solution for Multiobjective MDO

Publisher Summary This chapter reviews a multiobjective, multidisciplinary design optimization of two-dimensional airfoil designs. The control points on leading and trailing edges remain fixed, and the y-coordinates of the other control points are allowed to change during the optimization process. The grid for the Euler solver depends continuously and smoothly on the design parameters. The number of nodes and elements in the mesh might vary according to design because the meshes for the Helmholtz solver are done using the local fitting. The computations are made on an IBM SP2 parallel computer using high-performance switch and the MPICH message-passing library. As gradients are not required…

1. Breve descrizione dell’oggetto di studio Il concorso del Palazzo di Giustizia di Roma si svolge in quattro fasi svolte tra il 1884 e il 1887. Il progetto per il primo concorso, del 1884, redatto dall’allora giovanissimo Ernesto Basile (Palermo 1857-1932), rivela una grande perizia progettuale che trasforma il complesso programma funzionale in un austero edificio in stile neofiorentino. Brief description of the object of study The competition of the Palace of Justice in Rome takes place in four phases between 1884 and 1887. The project for the first competition in 1884 drawn up by the then very young Ernesto Basile (Palermo 1857-1932) reveals a great deal of design expertise that transforms the complex functional program into an austere building in neo-florentine style. The original drawings of the building not realized kept in the Basile Endowment of the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo have been the subject of preliminary study to the phases of analysis interpretation and conceptual reconstruction of the digital model. 2. An Entropy-Driven Scenario for Future Design Education

In a Domus article published in 1998, John Thackara claimed that design would lead by entropy in the future, and he won- dered how to avoid a similar dystopian scenario. As designers, we are aware of how wicked problems are really hard to face and how complexity has increased in these past decades: trans- disciplinary skills are therefore increasingly required. Incidentality on a continuum: A comparative conceptualization of incidental news consumption

This article seeks to contribute to theorizing the dynamics of incidental news consumption. Through an analysis of 200 semi-structured interviews with people in Argentina, Finland, Israel, Japan, and the United States, we show that intentionality in news consumption can be viewed on a continuum, which goes from deliberately setting apart time to access the news on specific outlets to skimming through unsought-for news on social and broadcast media, with intermediate practices such as respondents setting up an environment where they are more or less likely to encounter news.
